I get this question more than any other, usually from someone who just got back from a trip with a green mark on their neck. So let me answer it properly.
Solid gold does not tarnish. Everything else depends on what is underneath.
Why gold tarnishes, when gold cannot tarnish
Pure gold does not react with oxygen or salt. That is the whole reason humans have used it for six thousand years. But almost nothing is pure gold, because pure gold is too soft to hold a shape.
What you are actually wearing is one of three things:
- Gold plated — a microscopically thin layer of gold over brass or steel. Measured in microns. The gold does not tarnish; the base metal underneath does, as soon as the layer wears through.
- Gold filled — a much thicker layer of gold, bonded under heat and pressure, legally required to be at least 1/20th of the item's weight. Roughly a hundred times the gold of standard plating.
- Solid gold — 14k or 18k, gold all the way through, alloyed with other metals for strength.
When someone says their gold turned their skin green, the gold did not fail. The plating wore through and the copper in the base metal reacted with the acids on their skin. It is a plating-thickness problem, not a gold problem.
What the ocean actually does
Salt water is the harshest thing most jewelry meets. Salt accelerates the oxidation of base metals and gets into every seam and clasp. On solid gold it does nothing. On thin plating it strips it faster than anything except chlorine.
Chlorine is worse than the sea. A hotel pool will do more damage in an afternoon than a week of swimming in the Caribbean. Chlorine attacks the alloy metals in solid gold too — it will not destroy a 14k piece, but repeated exposure can leave it looking dull and, over years, weaken solder joints on delicate chains.
Sunscreen and oils are the quiet ones. They do not corrode anything, but they build a film that dulls the finish and traps salt against the metal. Most jewelry that looks tired after a trip is not damaged, it is coated.
Sand is abrasive. On plated jewelry, sand is what physically removes the layer that was protecting the base metal.
How to know before you buy
Ask what is underneath. A brand that plates over brass and calls it "18k gold" is not lying exactly, but it is not answering the question either. The honest version names the base metal, the plating thickness, and whether it is rated for water.

Caring for what you already own
- Rinse in fresh water after the beach or the pool. Not a deep clean — just get the salt and chlorine off before they sit.
- Dry it properly, including the clasp. Water trapped in a clasp is where corrosion starts.
- Put jewelry on last, after sunscreen, perfume and lotion have absorbed.
- Take plated jewelry off before the pool. Chlorine is the one thing not worth risking.
- Store it dry and separate. Humidity is why jewelry left in a bathroom ages faster than jewelry in a drawer.
The honest summary
If you want jewelry you never think about — in the sea, in the shower, sleeping in it — buy solid gold or buy from someone who will tell you the plating specification without being vague about it. If a piece is cheap and shiny and the brand will not say what is underneath, assume it is thin plating and treat it as seasonal.
